•Eigenfunction-based point cloud surface segmentation.•Partition the point cloud of an object with free-form surface into meaningful regions.•Introduce an efficiently computable set of volumetric eigenfunctions for segmentation.•Segment the point cloud surface via subdividing volumetric eigenfunctions.•Adapt the Mumford-Shah model and the split Bregman method to the volumetric setting.
