•An approximate approach is proposed for reliability evaluation of multistate flow networks in terms of minimal cuts.•The proposed approach considers some minimal cuts to remove from the reliability evaluation process.•Many benchmark examples are employed to show the efficiency of the proposed approach in comparison with existing algorithms.•The numerical results show that sometimes our algorithm finds the exact solution 4 times faster than the existing algorithms.•The numerical results show that our algorithm obtains very good approximations more than 114 times faster than the others. |
