•Accuracy of SMOS SSM global operational product across 2 continents is explored.•Ground measurements from different FLUXNET sites are used.•A generally reasonable agreement was found in the 0–5 cm soil moisture layer.•Grassland, shrublands and woody savanna attained best agreement.•Seasonally, summer and autumn underperformed spring and winter. |
