Title
ECPUB: An Energy Efficiency Evaluation Metric in Wireless Sensor Network
Abstract
Improving the energy efficiency and balancing the energy distribution are two important aspects to prolong the lifetime of a wireless sensor network. This paper proposes the energy-cost-per-useful-bit (ECPUB) metric for evaluating the aforementioned aspects. It takes advantage of the concept “utility” in economics, and the energy consumption of transmitter and receiver, residual energy, the data quantity that sink needs and receives are taken into consideration. The impact of data quantity and the imbalance of node energy are discussed in this paper. To verify ECPUB, we apply it to LEACH protocol and the network lifetime is extended. This metric could be used to adjust the data size when doing data aggregation and to decide the appropriate next hop, path, or cluster heads.
