•An extended framework for integrated process synthesis-intensification is presented.•Phenomena based synthesis methodology is extended in terms of application.•Multi-scale approach: unit operation, task and phenomena.•The framework is applied to one industrially relevant case study - bio succinic acid.•Innovative and more sustainable process alternatives are identified for the production of bio succinic acid.
