Title
Design of Compact Planar B-spline Curves using DP Control Point Selection with Multi-level Error Functions : Towards Usability Improvement in Design of Dynamic Font-based Characters
Abstract
This paper considers a problem of redesigning some given curves on two-dimensional plane (i.e. planar curves). The given curves are constituted by employing the normalized uniform B-splines as basis function. Then, a sequence of control points of B-splines represents the geometrical outline of curves, where their knot points are equally-spaced. We here develop a method for yielding more ‘compact B-spline’ curves by using only the dominant control points, in which the desired approximation accuracy is achieved. Such a selection of dominant control point is formulated as a graph problem and is solved by dynamic programming (DP). Moreover, it is shown that the representation of compact B-splines is realizable using NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines). We demonstrate the performance by some experimental studies. The result of this study will be useful for improving usability in the design of the so-called dynamic font-based characters.
