•The cage generation problem is analyzed.•We propose a novel user-assisted tool to build cages guided by the skeleton.•A harmonic field is used to trace non-planar cross-section.•Our cages reflect the extrinsic symmetry of the input model.•We produce cages for a variety of 3D models including complex shapes. |
