A 100-120GHz 20Gbps Bits-to-RF 16QAM Transmitter Using 1-bit Digital-to-Analog Interface
Abstract
This paper presents a 100-120GHz direct modulation wireless transmitter (TX) that takes raw data bits as the input and generates 16QAM constellation by combining two QPSK constellations with an amplitude ratio of 2. It delivers 3dBm maximum CW output power. Wireless test at 20-cm TX-RX distance measures 20Gbps data rate with an EVM of -15.8dB, corresponding to a BER of 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-3</sup> . The TX completely avoids the need for high-speed high-linearity DACs, thereby significantly reducing implementation cost and improving efficiency.
