•Authors have studied the authentication scheme of wireless sensor network based health-care service proposed by Challa et al.•Authors have found that scheme has several weaknesses which makes it vulnerable to various security threats. Their scheme also suffers from improper revocation and re-registration phase.•Authors have proposed an improved authentication scheme for patient monitoring using wireless sensor network in remote health-care system.•BAN logic and AVISPA simulation confirms that the proposed scheme ensures mutual authentication between communicating parties and also the scheme is robust against several threats.•The performance comparison with respect to communication, memory storage and computation cost ensures that proposed scheme is secure and overcomes most of the threats in this particular area. |
