Media-based modulation (MBM) is a recently proposed modulation scheme which has the advantage of increased spectrum efficiency and improved performance. In this paper, we consider the eavesdropping concern and transmit diversity problem of single-input multiple-output (SIMO) MBM systems. Different from most of the existing diversity-achieving MBM schemes which require at least two transmit antennas, the proposed scheme provides a second order transmit diversity by using a single transmit antenna and encoding the symbols across two adjacent lime slots. Although the symbol detection is improved by the diversity-achieving coding scheme for the receivers, a secure mapping scheme is designed based on the legitimate channel realizations of the SIMO-MBM system, and the mappings from the information bits to the transmit patterns appear to be random for the eavesdropper so that the correct decoding of the bits are prevented at the eavesdropper. Compared to the existing secure MBM scheme using a single transmit antenna, the proposed scheme can achieve transmit diversity and obtain better bit error rate (BER) performance under similar transmission efficiency. |
