Extending the stability limit of explicit scheme with spatial filtering for solving wave equations. |

The explicit finite-difference scheme is widely used for solving the wave equation; however, its time step is strictly constrained by the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) stability limit. We apply spatial filtering to reduce the high-wavenumber noise caused by using a larger time step beyond the CFL stability limit. We further incorporate the forward and inverse time dispersion transforms to reduce the time-dispersion error. This method allows us to use a time step larger than the maximum time step allowed by the CFL stability limit. |
