•PET data reconstruction algorithm based on the Negative Binomial (NB) distribution is described.•It generalizes over the Poisson distribution in case of over-dispersion of raw data.•Mathematical derivation, simulation study and real data tests are described.•The NB-MLEM algorithm outperforms standard P-MLEM in terms of bias and noise. |
