Learning a new sound pair in a second language: Italian learners and German glottal consonants |
Abstract | ||
---|---|---|
•Italian learners of German acquire one perceptual category for /h/ and /Ɂ/.•An eye-tracking task reveals deletion costs in spoken word recognition for both sounds.•No costs in spoken word recognition by sound substitutions.•More native-like performance in production, despite deletions and substitutions.•Orthographic coding and awareness of /h/ help more in explicit tasks. |
