•A bi-objective transit network design problem considering emissions is introduced.•A bi-objective memetic algorithm effectively tackles this problem.•A heterogeneous fleet with busses of different sizes and technologies is examined.•We show the benefits of considering emissions during transit network design.•CO2 emissions can be reduced considerably with a little increase in the travel time. |
