Abstract
•The state-of-the-art remote sensing research in monitoring plant diseases and pests were reviewed.•The characteristics of multiple forms of agricultural remote sensing systems were described.•The spectral, fluorescence, thermal, imaged-based, landscape and habitat features were highlighted.•Multiple algorithms, temporal analysis for monitoring plant diseases and pests were introduced.•The challenges and trends in monitoring plant diseases and pests were stated.
