Title
Smart Energy Monitoring System for Residential in Malaysia
Abstract
Energy efficiency play an important role in addressing the issue of inadequacy of electrical consumption. In Malaysia, residential users have been identified as one of major contributor towards high electricity consumption. Due to this issue, government has invented smart meter that allow users to view the total of electricity consumption on the LCD display of the meter. However, the smart meter not able to support users to monitor their electricity consumption over the Internet. This study aims to propose a web-based system called SMARTER for monitoring energy consumption for residentials in Malaysia. SMARTER provides users a dashboard that demonstrates real time data visualisation from the smart meter. The system also enables users to control the switching on or off for the electrical appliances in the residential. We develop a prototype for SMARTER application that incorporate SDM230-Modbus as smart meter and Arduino Uno as middle platform between the smart meter and the application. We perform a preliminary user study to evaluate the usability of the SMARTER system. We found that all participants agree that the system is useful and 92% of participants agreed that the system meet their needs. SMARTER is an effective system that allow users to keep track and optimize energy consumption to save cost. With the use of SMARTER, users can estimate their daily, weekly and monthly energy consumptions and identify abnormal patterns of energy use.
