•Proposes m2OLS as a new modification of the mOLS algorithm using gOMP based preselection.•The proposed m2OLS enjoys lower computational complexity than mOLS, while enjoying recovery performance at par with mOLS for correlated dictionaries.•Presents convergence analysis for both noiseless and noisy measurements.•Derives a recovery bound in terms of restricted isometry constant.
