•System operating in random environment and having a rescue option in the case of mission failure is considered.•The sets of components performing a primary mission and a rescue procedure partially overlap.•Each component consists of heterogeneous parallel elements.•An algorithm for obtaining the mission success and system survival probabilities is suggested.•The optimal redundancy allocation problem is solved for the considered system. |
