•Optimal dual-EWMA scheme is proposed to monitor a range of process shifts effectively.•The objective is to identify the best sample size of the dual-EWMA scheme.•The proposed optimal scheme outperforms the traditional one by about 35%.•Application of the optimal scheme is illustrated in an injection moulding process.•A design table is provided to ease the application of the optimal scheme in practice. |
