•A quantitative drought monitoring framework at field scales using ESTARFM between MODIS and Sentinel-2 has been developed.•The fused VTCI are better correlated with cumulative precipitation in winter wheat planting area in China.•The study shows that drought levels of winter wheat, woodland and bare land can be clearly separated and quantified. |
