Title
Measuring corruption using the Internet data - Example from countries along the Belt and Road.
Abstract
How to scientifically measure corruption has become a key issue for both the anti-corruption research and practice. By introducing the search popularity of corruption-related topics in Google Trends, this paper proposes a comprehensive corruption index called Corruption Search Index (CSI). A novel search strategy is designed, aiming to adjust the search popularity data for the comparison among different countries. The empirical analysis of 63 countries along the Belt and Road shows that Singapore remains the cleanest status among these countries while Afghanistan is facing a serious corruption situation.
