•The centralized Software-Defined Networking (SDN) makes itself an attractive target.•A cost-efficient and powerful table-miss striking attack is designed to SDN.•A defense is proposed to mitigate table-miss striking attacks, called SDN Guardian.•Experimental results show that SDN Guardian is lightweight and effective.
