•The integrated system of achieving radar target detection and two-way communications between the integrated platform and communication station is developed, which is scarce in the existing literature.•The proposed scheme of embedding information symbols into the integrated waveform via transmit beamforming can avoid the cross-interferences between radar system and communication system no matter the communication directions locating in the mainlobe or sidelobe.•The transmit beam-pattern synthesized by minimizing the integrated sidelobe level (ISL) has lower sidelobe level (SLL) for the integrated system, joining with the embedded information symbols for optimization.•A special structure of orthogonal waveform is designed to constrain the PAPR upper bound to a low level, which makes the integrated waveform suitable for a radar platform shared with a communication system. |
