•Hybrid GA-BPNN model provides reliable and continuous estimates of maize growth and yield.•GA is a useful optimizing technique for improving the performance of the BP neural network.•GLASS LAI has a high spatio-temporal continuity for reflecting the variation patterns of maize growth.•VTCI is an effective approach for drought monitoring and highly related to maize growth conditions.
