Title
Development of a Rust Assessment System for Weathering Steel
Abstract
Weathering steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance by protecting the surface with a dense rust layer and suppressing the development of additional rust. It is used in bridges, outer walls of buildings, railway vehicle sides, etc. However, due to the amount of salt in some atmospheres, rust progression may not be suppressed. As harsh environments reduce the durability of weathering steel, the rust condition must be assessed regularly. Currently, the rust condition of weathering steel is evaluated by visual inspection. This system requires specialized inspectors, and the accuracy and repeatability may be inconsistent because the evaluation is subjective. In this study, we investigate a system that captures rust using a multitude of lights, cameras, and image processing to inspect the rust condition of weathering steel. Herein we describe the developed system and propose a rust condition evaluation method. In experiments, each rust condition is correctly identified using the proposed method, demonstrating its effectiveness.
