•Ergonomic risk and cycle time are minimized in U-shaped assembly line and worker assignment balancing problem.•A restarted iterated pareto greedy algorithm is extended to tackle this problem.•The proposed algorithm uses problem-specific and heuristic-based initialization.•The proposed algorithm uses precedence-based greedy and local search phases.
