•Basis expansion model (BEM) represents the DSC.•BEM-based partial interference cancellation (BPIC) and BPIC with successive interference cancellation (BPIC-SIC) methods remove the interference.•The satisfactory performance of BPIC and BPIC-SIC methods depend on meeting a constraint on the number of transmit and receive antennas.•BEM-based tree search (BTS), BEM-based reduced complexity tree search (BRCTS), and BRCTS with sphere decoding (BRCTS-SD) overcome the limitations of BPIC and BPIC-SIC methods. |
