•A framework for hyperspectral remote sensing of crop N status is presented.•Recommendations on the choice of crop N status indicators are given.•Inconsistency in selected wavebands by different methods is illustrated.•Determination of optimal mother wavelet, scale and wavelength is discussed.•Pros and cons of crop N retrieval methods are summarized and analyzed.
