•A disjunctive optimization model for shell and tube heat exchanger is developed.•The model includes automatically selection of heat transfer enhancement techniques.•Detailed geometrical components of exchanger can be obtained after optimization.•Optimal solutions include the investigation of local and global optimums.•Performance and benefits of proposed model are demonstrated.
