•A new Chinese-Herbs dataset is constructed, supporting the research of Chinese herbal recognition and machine learning.•A new Attentional Pyramid Networks is proposed, where competitive attention and spatial collaborative attention are proposed.•The proposed CA selectively emphasizes the features of different level whereas SCA quantifies the importance of each region.•A framework with APN for Chinese herbal recognition is proposed. Experiment results verify the effectiveness of our methods. |
