At the 25th ACM SIGKDD conference on Knowledge and Data Discovery (KDD), a special Earth Day symposium was held to bring together thought leaders in academia, indus- try and government to discuss opportunities for data science to help meet the challenges facing our planet Earth. The all-day event showcased some examples of data-intensive re- search being done to study Earth-related phenomena. A key goal of the symposium was to raise awareness about the unique challenges that Earth-related datasets pose for data mining.
