•A novel two-city SIR epidemic model on complex networks is proposed.•The population size varies with time and the resulting network topology is dynamic.•The demographics and intercity commuting pattern is considered.•The basic reproduction number R0 of the proposed model is analytically obtained.•The stability of equilibria of the current model is analyzed in detail.
