•An aircraft hangar maintenance planning problem under MRO the outsourcing mode is addressed.•Aircraft parking positions are assigned in a flexible manner, which incorporates movement planning in the hangar.•The MILP formulation models the interrelation between service scheduling, layout planning and manpower assignment.•A two-stage optimization approach is proposed to provide good quality solutions in tackling challenging instances.•The impacts of the variation of maintenance demand, intensity and manpower supply are analysed in computational experiments. |
