•Conventional DEA assumes homogeneity of DMUs•The current paper considers DEA in the presence of identifiable groups of DMUs•We consider case of two groups of automobiles, conventional and hybrid drives•Differing average scores in the groups point to need for an adjustment methodology•A DEA type model is presented for creating a level playing field for the two groups
