Abstract
•Development of unified gas-kinetic wave-particle method for diatomic gas.•The multiscale solution is captured through dynamic adaptation of wave and particle formulation.•UGKWP becomes particle method in rarefied regime and hydrodynamic solver in continuum regime.•UGKWP keeps optimal efficiency in different flow regimes for the hypersonic flow simulation.
