•Three universal distributed linear fusion algorithms with different gains are presented under the LUMV criterion.•Distributed optimal linear fusion estimators without feedback are designed for multi-sensor linear discrete systems.•Stability and steady-state property of the proposed fusion filter without feedback are analyzed.•Distributed optimal linear fusion estimators with feedback are presented.•Optimality of the proposed distributed fusion filter with feedback is proved.
