•A simple yet efficient elites regeneration framework can be easily applied to the existing DE variants.•The elite individuals are resampled using Gaussian distribution and Cauchy distribution to explore the potential of their neighbourhood area.•Linear reduction mechanism of the elite population is implemented to promote the efficiency of the regeneration framework.•The proposed framework is applied to 10 DE variants and tested on the CEC 2014 benchmark functions and the optimization performances of all of the ten algorithms are highly enhanced. |
