•Exact spatial and temporal balance of all energy exchanges for the 3D compressible Euler equations•Unconditionally stable for all linear buoyancy modes, and all linear acoustic modes below some horizontal CFL number•For baroclinic instability, internal gravity mode has a time scale four times faster than a traditional trapezoidal scheme•Energetically consistent vertical upwinding allows for the suppression of spurious oscillations at non-hydrostatic scales•Non-hydrostatic rising bubble simulation on affine geometry can be run stably without any dissipation |
