•We propose an approach to perform the runtime testing of an adaptive system based on context variation and feature modeling, thus allowing the generation and execution of test cases in the adaptation mechanism during its operations.•Our tool that implements the approach can be integrated into the system’s source code, which enables the control of context and verification of features status.•The results of our mutation testing evaluation indicate the feasibility of the approach to identify adaptation failures at runtime. |
