•Cellular automata (CA) principles are applied to study intergranular (IGC) corrosion.•Hexagonal-based grids are better than cubic grid for IGC studies with CA.•Voronoï tessellation is used to reproduce material microstructure.•Cellular automata simulations reflect experimental IGC observations.
