•A new method of converting the distribution functions of the Lattice Boltzmann Method between moving reference frames is developed.•The computational cost of the proposed economical conversion is studied.•The minimal velocity stencils in 3D and 2D which reproduce istothermal Navier–Stokes dynamics are found to be an icosahedron (13 velocities) and hexagon (7 velocities) respectively. |
