•We propose an approach to assess layer similarity in multiplex networks based on community matching.•Extrinsic clustering evaluation metrics, such as purity and F-measure, are used to quantify the community matching.•The proposed similarity measure provides more consistent layer taxonomies than other approaches.•The choice of community detection algorithm does not have a significant impact on the similarity scores.•Similarity scores can be affected by the stopping criterion of the community detection algorithm. |
