•A new histogram shifting method is proposed for reversible data hiding with contrast enhancement.•Reversible contrast enhancement can be implemented with the proposed method.•A two-sided histogram shifting is employed to double the amount of embedding capacity at each round and maintain the mean brightness of the image without extra calculations.•The security analysis of the existing methods is conducted for the first time which reveals that the security level of the proposed method is higher than previous methods. |
