•Separating the contributions of aleatory and epistemic uncertainty in prognostics.•Uncertainty in prognostics is managed by suggesting a proper measurement schedule.•Data measurement is scheduled to reduce the epistemic uncertainty to the desired level.•Approaches based on model-based and data-driven prognostics are proposed.
