•A model for floodwater damage to horizontal cylindrical vessels is proposed.•The generalised vulnerability model provides an assessment of structural damage.•Damage is assessed based on floodwater height and velocity.•Geometrical data of the vessel and weight of the internals are considered in the model.•Shortcut correlations were developed to provide a preliminary screening. |
