•An improved HSMM was proposed to model and tag the spindle vibration signals.•Mel frequency cepstral coefficients are extracted as observation sequences.•The mean Intersection over Union was used to evaluate the accuracy.•The proposed method was verified in the laboratory and real industry machining.
