•African American English, Jewish English, and Appalachian English were studied.•The three varieties show phonetic differences in pitch accents labeled as H* and L+H*.•The three varieties differ in the rate of use of these pitch accents, and their position in the phrase.•MAE-ToBI has strengths and weaknesses for varieties which vary from standardized versions of English. |
