•Pluricentric Research on German by means of a listener judgment experiment.•Interpolation of speech samples between Austrian and German German standard language.•Interpolated samples are perceived as a continuum by Austrian and German listeners.•Listener groups judge the original and interpolated speech as closer to their own respective standard.•Judgments are based more on spectral information than the F0 contour.
