The interest for private 5G as a platform to drive research and innovation is increasing all the time. This interest is becoming very visible not only within the industry in general and some specific vertical markets, but within the academia too. We are seeing more private 5G deployments in different universities and academic institutions happening across the globe and specifically in Europe. UBT in Prishtina is one of these academic institutions that has deployed a 5G network with a clear goal to drive innovation and research and to also help the small organisations in accelerating the adoption of 5G to support their solutions and ideas. The main goal of this deployment was to allow students, researchers, and academics to test and experiment with the features and capabilities of novel designs and solutions with very rigid technical requirements, such as very high bandwidth and very low latency requirements. This paper describes the experience of such a deployment with the focus on features and capabilities of the 5G network followed by the description of the challenges faced while building this network as well as identifying areas of further study and areas of research opportunities in this space. Finally, this paper also shows some testing results during the building of this testbed and the key uses cases tested supported and tested in this testbed. |
