Title
A bus-monitor unit for fault-tolerant system configurations
Abstract
This paper presents the design of a bus-monitor unit whose function is to detect and mask errors arising in modular redundant systems by monitoring their respective buses. The error recovery is accomplished by detecting the failed unit and appropriately multiplexing the fault-free system buses. The unit is also capable of recording faults observed in the monitored buses and reporting them to the operator upon request. Another unique feature of the bus-monitor unit is its capability to classify faults into transient and permanent ones. Efficient utilization of this feature allows the bus-monitor to increase the effective lifetime of the redundant units by allowing components that experience transient errors to participate in the error recovery process. In addition, the unit is designed with self-checking features, thus providing on-line error detection that can be utilized to recover from failures occurring in the bus-monitor unit itself. Finally, the architecture of the bus-monitor unit is suitable for single chip implementation. All these features make the bus-monitor a very appealing device for implementations of highly reliable fault-tolerant systems.
